It is a well-known fact that chronic sun exposure can result in premature aging of the skin. While limited sun exposure has its health benefits, particularly providing vitamin D, prolonged exposure can lead to permanent damage. The main culprit lies in the UV rays. While covering up and wearing sunscreen help, they certainly do not block out all UV rays.
Chronic sun exposure can lead to a variety of problems for your skin including freckles, wrinkles, skin thinning, liver spots, leathery skin, white spots, and brown patches called melasma. The substance that maintains the normal color of your skin is called melanin. Increased sun exposure leads to increased melanin levels which in turn cause dark spots or hyperpigmentation. These appear as flat, freckle-like round spots with a regular or irregular border. The most common locations for sun spot development is the face, neck, décolletage, upper back and shoulders, forearms and back of the hands.
One of the other very important effects of chronic sun exposure is the development of cancerous lesions or pre-cancerous lesions, known as actinic keratoses. These can occur in sun-exposed areas of skin and present as rough spots. Because they can evolve into squamous cell carcinoma, it is important to treat them at an early stage.
Treatment
Although the sun can give you a healthy glow, the long term result is skin that looks weathered with increased fine lines and wrinkles. With anti-aging treatments, those problems can be targeted so skin can be restored to a more youthful appearance.
Treatment options will largely depend on the extent of skin damage and will therefore be customized for each person. The following options can be used alone but often in combination therapy.
CO2 laser resurfacing: this is a highly effective method used to target abnormal skin, addressing everything from wrinkles, fine lines, depigmentation, rough skin texture, discoloration and age spots. It is an ablative treatment meaning that removes and resurfaces the topmost layer of skin revealing new, firm skin underneath. Meaningful results are seen after the first procedure but best results are seen after a series of 3.
Chemical Peel: Peels are a great way to treat skin a range of skin issues. These peels are great for people with fine lines and wrinkles, freckles, and blemishes. You will notice results after one peel, but for best results, you'll need a series of 3 to 6 peels over a period of time.
Curettage and cautery: Electrocautery is a process that uses heat to remove a lesion. This is a great way to remove small skin tags, or lesions including warts or wart-like skin growths that have a waxy, stuck on appearance.
Photodynamic therapy: also known as Levulan/Amaleuz photofacial or ALA. It is FDA-approved to treat actinic keratosis, a pre-cancerous skin lesion. It combines the use of a photosensitizing topical medication with rejuvenating light therapy to trigger cell turnover for clearer, healthier skin. This light and chemical-based reaction causes selective destruction of precancerous skin lesions.
For comprehensive skin rejuvenation we often combine effective sun damage and pigmentation treatments, such as one or more lasers with microneedling or chemical peels in order to achieve the best results. Additionally, you can also undergo anti-wrinkle treatments, such as Botox/Dysport, facial fillers, for a more rejuvenated youthful appearance.

- The Jessner peel is one of the most effective peels we offer which is great for treating minor, pigment related issues. It works by removing the top-most layer of the skin which in-turn lightens hyperpigmentation and shrinks pores. It is quick, easy, and a non-invasive way to completely rejuvenate your skin’s appearance with virtually no downtime.
- For cases with more extensive sun damage, the TCA (trichloroacetic acid) peel is effective in penetrating the outer and middle layer of skin to eliminate damaged skin cells and stimulate new skin growth. TCA is considered a medium-to-deep strength peel, depending on how many layers are applied to the skin. It is effective in removing blemishes, fading sunspots and hyperpigmentation. Downtime will vary depending on the strength of acid used.
